What is Costa Smeralda?

Costa Smeralda — the Emerald Coast — is a 55-kilometre stretch of northeastern Sardinia that has been synonymous with luxury, exclusivity and natural beauty since the Aga Khan IV purchased it in 1962 and transformed it into one of the world's most exclusive resorts.

The name comes from the extraordinary colour of the water: a turquoise-green so vivid it seems almost artificial. Combined with the dramatic pink granite rocks, white sandy beaches and fragrant Mediterranean maquis, Costa Smeralda creates a landscape unlike anywhere else on earth.

At its heart is Porto Cervo — a purpose-built village of luxury boutiques, superyacht marina, restaurants and hotels that serves as the social and commercial hub of the Costa Smeralda during the summer season. The marina can berth over 700 yachts simultaneously and during July and August hosts some of the world's largest and most valuable private vessels.

For events, Costa Smeralda offers something that no other Mediterranean destination can match: a perfect combination of extraordinary natural beauty, world-class luxury infrastructure, international clientele and a cultural tradition of exclusivity and privacy that creates the ideal conditions for premium experiences.

The Event Season: When to Go in 2026

Costa Smeralda operates on a compressed but intense summer season. Understanding the rhythm of the season is essential for planning events effectively.

May – early June
Shoulder season

Ideal for exclusive events. Venues and suppliers are available, prices are lower, weather is warm and the sea is already swimmable. Fewer crowds but still full luxury infrastructure.

Late June – July
Peak season begins

The international jet set arrives. This is prime season for high-profile events. Book venues and suppliers at least 3–4 months in advance. Energy is extraordinary.

August
Peak of peak

The most intense, exclusive and expensive month. Every luxury villa, beach club and restaurant is at capacity. Planning 4–6 months ahead is essential. For major events, 6+ months recommended.

September
Golden shoulder

Arguably the most beautiful month. Warm sea, golden light, fewer crowds, more relaxed energy. Excellent for weddings, intimate events and corporate retreats. Often the best value.

For 2026, we recommend that anyone planning a significant event between June and August contact us no later than March. September events have more flexibility but should still be confirmed by May at the latest.

The Best Locations for Events in Costa Smeralda

Costa Smeralda has a wealth of spectacular event locations. Here are the key areas and what they offer:

Porto Cervo

The social epicentre. The piazzetta, marina and surrounding hills offer iconic settings for galas, brand events and large celebrations. The energy here during summer is unparalleled.

Cala di Volpe

One of the most iconic bays on the Costa Smeralda, home to the legendary Cala di Volpe hotel. The private beaches and clifftop terraces here are exceptional for intimate events and photography.

Romazzino & Capriccioli

More secluded and natural than Porto Cervo. Beautiful private villas and beaches accessible by boat. Perfect for exclusive dinners and intimate gatherings.

Baja Sardinia

Slightly north of Porto Cervo, with a more relaxed atmosphere and excellent beach clubs. Popular for younger luxury clients and lively sunset events.

La Maddalena Archipelago

A short boat ride from Costa Smeralda, the La Maddalena islands offer stunning wild beaches accessible only by sea. Extraordinary for private picnics, boat parties and filming.

Planning Your Event: What You Need to Know

Planning a luxury event in Costa Smeralda is fundamentally different from organising events in most other destinations. Here is what first-time clients consistently tell us they wish they had known in advance:

Everything requires more lead time than you expect. The best venues, caterers, entertainment acts, photographers and florists are booked months in advance during peak season. The rule of thumb: if you think 2 months is enough, plan for 4. If you think 4 months is enough, plan for 6.

Local relationships are everything. Costa Smeralda is a small, closed community. Access to private villas, discrete services and the best local suppliers is not available through generic event platforms — it comes through years of relationships built on trust and performance. This is the primary value of working with an established local operator.

Permits take time. Events on beaches, at sea and in protected coastal areas require municipal and coastguard permits. These cannot be rushed. A local team who knows the process and the right contacts makes an enormous difference.

Privacy is valued highly. Costa Smeralda has a culture of discretion. Guests at high-profile events expect not to be photographed without permission and not to have their attendance publicised. Experienced event producers understand and enforce these expectations as standard.

Why Work with a Local Event Producer?

International event agencies often attempt to produce events in Costa Smeralda from a distance, relying on generic supplier lists and remote coordination. The results are consistently inferior — and sometimes disastrous — compared to what a dedicated local team delivers.

Our team at Costa Smeralda Events & Productions is based in Costa Smeralda year-round. Leo Hazonet has spent years building an unmatched knowledge of every venue, supplier and location on the island. Matteo Mariotti brings the production standards and creative vision of a 15-year international career. Together they deliver events that genuinely reflect Costa Smeralda at its finest — not a generic luxury template applied to a beautiful backdrop.

"The difference between a good event in Costa Smeralda and a truly extraordinary one is almost entirely the quality of the local team."
